In a recent forecast by market research firm Trendforce, the introduction of the new 13-inch iPad Air is expected to significantly influence consumer preferences and impact sales of the higher-priced iPad Pro models. Amidst Apple's shift to more advanced OLED displays, the affordability of the iPad Air poses a compelling option for consumers.

The report elaborates on Apple's transition to AMOLED technology for the iPad Pro, noting this advanced screen allows for more precise control of pixels and reduced power consumption. Despite these enhancements, the high cost might deter potential buyers, especially with the new iPad Air entering the market at a considerably lower price point.

While the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models are anticipated to ship between 4.5 million to 5 million units in 2024, these numbers represent a downward revision from previous estimates. The main driver behind this shift is the attractive pricing of the 13-inch iPad Air, which starts at $799—significantly lower than the $1,299 starting price of the 13-inch iPad Pro.

Trendforce attributes the increase in iPad Pro prices primarily to its use of tandem OLED technology, designed to minimize issues like burn-in and extend the display's lifespan. Nevertheless, the steep price increase could make the more economical iPad Air a preferable choice for many.

This development underscores the growing competition within Apple's own lineup, where newer models with competitive pricing can cannibalize sales of high-end units.
